Sumitomo Realty & Development Co. (+10.52%) leads gainers after hedge fund Elliott Investment Management built a significant stake and held a meeting with the company's management on improving shareholder returns.

Banks and chipmakers lead losers after Japan's March Manufacturing Flash PMI showed a decline to 48.3 in factory activity from 49.0 in February. Japan's factory activity has been contracting for 9 straight months.

Meanwhile, Wall Street rallies after President Trump hinted at more flexibility with impending tariff plans.
