IHI develops Renewable Energy Thermal Utilization System at Soma City

Image
IHI Corporation announced that it has developed a system that efficiently and economically converts all previously discarded surplus direct current (DC) power at solar power plants into carbon-free steam. IHI together with Soma City launched pilot operations for this system known as the Renewable Energy Thermal Utilization System in April this year at the Soma City Sewage Disposal Plant in Fukushima Prefecture. Work thus far has demonstrated stable system performance. Solar power generation is susceptible to producing surplus electricity due to the variability of solar radiation throughout the day. Harnessing the potential to produce surplus electricity without wasting any is a vital step towards achieving a carbon-neutral society. IHI was inspired to develop this system that economically and flexibly converts renewable electricity into thermal energy (P2H: Power to Heat). Renewable Energy Thermal Utilization System Benefits 1. Producing low-cost, carbon-free energy :...

World's First Ammonia-Fueled Vessel Completed by IHI; Achieves Zero Carbon Emissions

Image
In Q3 2024, the ammonia-fueled tugboat Sakigake was completed by NYK Line (NYK) and IHI Corporation consolidated subsidiary IHI Power Systems Co., Ltd. (IHI Power Systems) in cooperation with Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK). This is the world's first ammonia-fueled vessel for commercial use.* The NYK Group company Shin-Nippon Kaiyosha will employ the vessel in tugboat operations in Tokyo Bay over a three-month demonstration period. This vessel was a Green Innovation Fund Project* initiated in October 2021 under Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) to develop vessels equipped with domestically produced 280mm bore four-stroke ammonia-fueled engines made by IHI Power Systems. The predecessor, the LNG-fueled tugboat of the same name, was completed in August 2015 as the first LNG-fueled vessel in Japan. After eight years of tug service in Tokyo Bay, the vessel was docked at the NYK Group's Keihin Dock Co. Ltd. for conversion t...

Mizuho supports landmark NeuConnect project in Europe for sustainable energy across the continent

Project Flow   As a leading bank in electricity transmission financing, Mizuho acted as loan Bookrunner and IRS/RPI swap provider in a £2.2 billion long-term project financing deal. The financing will support a consortium of Meridiam, Kansai Electric and Allianz Capital Partners to develop a 720km subsea electricity interconnector project between the UK and Germany that will be used to transmit affordable and secure sustainable energy. Interconnectors  have become indispensable in enabling countries to enhance their use of intermittent clean energy resources through shared access to energy networks that help to balance supply and demand of clean energy sources and support security of supply. Challenge Interconnectors play a vital role in the transition to green energy. These electrical highways of the sea are growing in strategic importance globally, with the EU targeting 15% interconnection by 2030 as part of its Climate and Energy Targets. The NeuConne...

"Use Forever Exhibition” in Kyoto Fuses Zen with Panasonic Model for Circular Economy

Image
The term “circular economy,” or “CE,” refers to an economic system committed to promoting the most efficient use of material resources throughout their lifecycle. CE will fundamentally change how companies do business. Panasonic is now considering a strategic roadmap based on practical action that can provide the global organization with an innovative and sustainable CE model. To help people understand the purpose of CE and provide examples based on the Group’s vision for a CE society, the Design HQ of Panasonic Corporation and the Manufacturing Innovation Division of Panasonic Holdings, Inc. held the “→ Use Forever Exhibition” event at Ryosokuin, a historic Buddhist temple in Kyoto, in September and October 2024. The one-way arrow in the title of the exhibition, “→ Use Forever,” suggests both an irreversible shift from a disposable culture to a culture of continuous use and a world where “disposable” no longer exists. “What happens to a washing machine that has served its purpose?” Fo...
