ENEOS & Mitsubishi to accelerate large-scale production study of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) at the Wakayama Plant in Japan

Image
ENEOS Corporation (Representative Director and President: Yamaguchi Atsuji; “ENEOS”) and Mitsubishi Corporation (Representative Director, President and CEO: Nakanishi Katsuya; “MC”) have agreed to jointly conduct a Front End Engineering Design to advance the study of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (“SAF”) production facility at the ENEOS Wakayama Plant in Arida City, Japan (the “FEED”). ENEOS has been studying the feasibility of such a facility since 2022. To advance this study to the next stage, ENEOS and MC, who have been jointly assessing the feasibility on the commercialization of SAF, will work together on the FEED. ENEOS has an established sales network, manufacturing and refining technologies and the expertise in feedstock procurement, while MC has expertise in the procurement of feedstock in Japan and around the world. By combining each companies' respective strengths, ENEOS and MC will accelerate the study with the aim of developing large-scale production of SAF in Japan. The f...

IHI Launches New Bench-Scale Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Test Rig in Singapore with A*STAR ISCE²

Image
IHI and IHI ASIA PACIFIC PTE. LTD. (“IHI”), in collaboration with the A*STAR Institute of Sustainability for Chemicals, Energy and Environment (“A*STAR ISCE 2 ”) (*1) in Singapore, held an opening ceremony to mark the completion of a Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) (*2) production test rig for CO 2 direct-conversion to liquid hydrocarbons, with a capacity of 5 kg per day. The technology streamlines the process by enabling a single step carbon dioxide direct-conversion to liquid hydrocarbons. This approach simplifies the production process, thus enhancing energy efficiency and reducing operational complexity.    The event was attended by over 100 guests, including government officials from various countries and the companies and organizations involved in the SAF value chain. IHI showcased the SAF production technology currently under development and its future ambition toward commercialization. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has set a long-t...

IHI develops Renewable Energy Thermal Utilization System at Soma City

Image
IHI Corporation announced that it has developed a system that efficiently and economically converts all previously discarded surplus direct current (DC) power at solar power plants into carbon-free steam. IHI together with Soma City launched pilot operations for this system known as the Renewable Energy Thermal Utilization System in April this year at the Soma City Sewage Disposal Plant in Fukushima Prefecture. Work thus far has demonstrated stable system performance. Solar power generation is susceptible to producing surplus electricity due to the variability of solar radiation throughout the day. Harnessing the potential to produce surplus electricity without wasting any is a vital step towards achieving a carbon-neutral society. IHI was inspired to develop this system that economically and flexibly converts renewable electricity into thermal energy (P2H: Power to Heat). Renewable Energy Thermal Utilization System Benefits 1. Producing low-cost, carbon-free energy :...

World's First Ammonia-Fueled Vessel Completed by IHI; Achieves Zero Carbon Emissions

Image
In Q3 2024, the ammonia-fueled tugboat Sakigake was completed by NYK Line (NYK) and IHI Corporation consolidated subsidiary IHI Power Systems Co., Ltd. (IHI Power Systems) in cooperation with Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK). This is the world's first ammonia-fueled vessel for commercial use.* The NYK Group company Shin-Nippon Kaiyosha will employ the vessel in tugboat operations in Tokyo Bay over a three-month demonstration period. This vessel was a Green Innovation Fund Project* initiated in October 2021 under Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) to develop vessels equipped with domestically produced 280mm bore four-stroke ammonia-fueled engines made by IHI Power Systems. The predecessor, the LNG-fueled tugboat of the same name, was completed in August 2015 as the first LNG-fueled vessel in Japan. After eight years of tug service in Tokyo Bay, the vessel was docked at the NYK Group's Keihin Dock Co. Ltd. for conversion t...

"Use Forever Exhibition” in Kyoto Fuses Zen with Panasonic Model for Circular Economy

Image
The term “circular economy,” or “CE,” refers to an economic system committed to promoting the most efficient use of material resources throughout their lifecycle. CE will fundamentally change how companies do business. Panasonic is now considering a strategic roadmap based on practical action that can provide the global organization with an innovative and sustainable CE model. To help people understand the purpose of CE and provide examples based on the Group’s vision for a CE society, the Design HQ of Panasonic Corporation and the Manufacturing Innovation Division of Panasonic Holdings, Inc. held the “→ Use Forever Exhibition” event at Ryosokuin, a historic Buddhist temple in Kyoto, in September and October 2024. The one-way arrow in the title of the exhibition, “→ Use Forever,” suggests both an irreversible shift from a disposable culture to a culture of continuous use and a world where “disposable” no longer exists. “What happens to a washing machine that has served its purpose?” Fo...
