ENEOS Corporation (Representative Director and President: Yamaguchi Atsuji; “ENEOS”) and Mitsubishi Corporation (Representative Director, President and CEO: Nakanishi Katsuya; “MC”) have agreed to jointly conduct a Front End Engineering Design to advance the study of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (“SAF”) production facility at the ENEOS Wakayama Plant in Arida City, Japan (the “FEED”). ENEOS has been studying the feasibility of such a facility since 2022. To advance this study to the next stage, ENEOS and MC, who have been jointly assessing the feasibility on the commercialization of SAF, will work together on the FEED. IHI and IHI ASIA PACIFIC PTE. LTD. IHI Corporation announced that it has developed a system that efficiently and economically converts all previously discarded surplus direct current (DC) power at solar power plants into carbon-free steam. IHI together with Soma City launched pilot operations for this system known as the Renewable Energy Thermal Utilization System in April this year at the Soma City Sewage Disposal Plant in Fukushima Prefecture. Work thus far has demonstrated stable system performance. Solar power generation is susceptible to producing surplus electricity due to the variability of solar radiation throughout the day. In Q3 2024, the ammonia-fueled tugboat Sakigake was completed by NYK Line (NYK) and IHI Corporation consolidated subsidiary IHI Power Systems Co., Ltd. (IHI Power Systems) in cooperation with Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK). This is the world's first ammonia-fueled vessel for commercial use.* The NYK Group company Shin-Nippon Kaiyosha will employ the vessel in tugboat operations in Tokyo Bay over a three-month demonstration period.
