Toyota and BMW to jointly develop third-generation hydrogen fuel cell system to achieve carbon neutrality

Tues 24 Sep 2024 - Toyota Motor Corporation (hereinafter "Toyota") and the BMW Group (hereinafter "BMW") have signed a basic agreement to strengthen their cooperative relationship in the field of hydrogen in order to achieve carbon neutrality and build a hydrogen society. In the future, they will jointly work on the development of fuel cell systems and infrastructure development.

In December 2011, the two companies agreed to build a medium- to long-term cooperative relationship in environmental technology, and have been jointly developing environmental technologies such as fuel cells and sports cars for more than 10 years. The two companies, which share a common desire to realize a hydrogen-based society, will accelerate technological innovation in fuel cell systems in the future.

More Fuel Cell Systems Installed in vehicles and a wide range of choices for both companies

Toyota and BMW are working together to develop a third-generation fuel cell system, which will be installed in both companies' models, providing customers with a wider range of fuel cell electric (FCEV) options. As a concrete first step, BMW plans to start production of its first mass-produced FCEV in 2028.

They will also work to create synergies through development and procurement cooperation, reduce costs by integrating powertrain units, and increase demand for commercial and passenger use. By making FCEVs a more accessible option, they will contribute to the realization of a hydrogen-based society.

Building a sustainable hydrogen supply network

 
In order to realize a hydrogen-based society, we need to move forward together with like-minded colleagues. At the dawn of dissemination, it is necessary to create demand for hydrogen in chunks, and they will work with companies that produce and supply hydrogen to improve infrastructure, ensure a stable supply of hydrogen, and reduce costs.

Based on these shared values, they will deepen their cooperative relationship with the aim of realizing a hydrogen-based society, including joint development of next-generation fuel cell systems and efforts to expand infrastructure. In order to realize a future in which hydrogen energy supports society, they will accelerate their efforts together with BMW and with colleagues across industries."

Toyota has positioned hydrogen as an important energy source in its efforts to achieve carbon neutrality, and has been working with many colleagues in the areas of "production, hump, storage, and use."
